Friday Fives

Friday Fives

1. Seeing: What’s the most beautiful piece of artwork that you’ve ever
seen in person? Where was it, and when? Why does it stand out in your
mind?

I can’t remember the exact name of the piece, but it is a piece of Spanish conquistador art from South America at the Denver Art museum. It is a scene of a Spanish priest getting blessed by the Virgin Mary and surrounded by native “heathens.” The colors are so vivid and it is so telling about the total naivete and ego of the Europeans to think that their mission in the New World was a mission imposed by God. It is very telling

2. If you were one of the muppets, which one would you be and why?
Grover is my fav. He is old school and part of the original pack of the beloved Henson clan. He isn’t a marquee star, like Kermit or Miss Piggy and he has been edged out by Elmo on the sesame Street Walk of Fame, but that just makes me love him even more. For more on Grover go here. (longish read to tooooooo funny.)

3. Hearing: How would you describe the sound of your voice? When it’s
played back for you, do you like the sound of it? Do you feel that
your voice is similar to anyone else’s?

It frightens me. It is higher pitched than I hear it in my head. I talk to fast and am too chatty. When I hear a voicemail or some other recording of me, I am usually surprised at how much I just ramble on and on and on when I talk.

4. Touching: Would you consider yourself a “touchy-feely” person, or
do you prefer staying within your own personal “zone” most of the
time? Do you often give/receive hugs, offer handshakes, or greet
others with a kiss on the cheek?

I hang around with a crowd of huggers and touchy feely affection. And I wouldn’t have it any other way. I rarely give lots of hugs to strangers, in the elevator for example, but I am not totally against it. Watch out, here I come.

5. Smelling: Do you wear perfume/cologne? What kind? Do you have a
particular favorite? What fragrances do you tend to prefer?

Just some basic aftershave. No big smell goody stuff. Why do you ask? Is there something you are telling me?

  1. 1. Seeing:

Tough question—as an art geek, IÂ’ve looked at an awful lot of pretty pictures. The one that comes to mind first, was when I stumbled upon a room in the Philadelphia Art Museum a couple of years that held one of MonetÂ’s sunflower paintings. One of the most ubiquitous images in impressionism, and voila–there it was. The paint is applied very, very thickly, and the color had faded quite a bit, to a mustard-y yellow, rather than the vibrant yellow I would have expected. I guess it stands out simply because I didnÂ’t expect to see it that day.

    2. If you were one of the muppets, which one would you be and why?

Rolf. Ever’body love Rolf. He’s a passionate musician, has a biting wit, and I just love the way his ears flop around when he plays. Cute, talented, witty—hell I’m practically Rolf already.

    3. Hearing:

Gravelly and nasal. ItÂ’s often compared to Stevie NicksÂ’ voice. I hate the sound of my own voice thus I rarely speak.

  2. 4. Touching:

Generally speaking, I’m a cautious and somewhat standoffish person. I’m touchy-feely as is appropriate to situation. And I do get mahsef’ into quite a numbah of predicaments that require extensive touchin’ ‘n feelin.

    5. Smelling:

I have about 15 that I could wear, favoring lighter fragrances that are neither woody nor musky. I like florals, citrus, and aromatics. I usually pick one new fragrance at the beginning of the spring and early fall. Right now IÂ’m wearing Salvatore Ferregamo, this summer I wore Paul Smith, alternating it with Michael Kors. Other faves include Molto Smalto (I *always* get in trouble when I wear it), Neiges (reminds me of winter), and Cuiron (has kind of a leathery undertone, and I *usually* get in trouble when I wear it.

  3. Seeing:
    1. Botticelli’s Birth of Venus, Caravaggio’s Head of Medusa and so many more. I wandered the halls of the Uffizi in Florence with tears streaming down my face. Years of art classes couldn’t prepare me for seeing any of these paintings in person. Truly a mystical experience I’ll never forget.
    2. I, too, love Grover. He’s near, he’s far and he’s BLUE.
    Hearing:
    3. I really can’t stand the stand of my own voice, nasaly and mushy-sounding. Unfortunately my parents STILL have me on their answering machine message.
    Touching:
    4. I’m a very affectionate bear. Hugs and pets are the best!
    Smelling:
    5. For my fall/winter perfume, I like Coco by Chanel, and for spring/summer I wore Aqua Allegoria-Lilia Bella (freesia), but I’ll likely switch next year. I’m trying a sample of Dolce & Gabbana now and still need to try out the new Prada.

  4. Better late than never, right?
    1. Seeing: I’d have to say a simple charcoal sketch by William Stockman of a man lying on the floor with his throat slashed and bleeding – and a single dove flying from the wound. Truly, all of his work (particularly his amazing oil paintings) just floors me and I wish he’d have another show here soon. Breathtaking. Also, Bernini’s sculptures at La Borghese Museum in Rome were awe-inspiring. Luminescent and stunning.
    2. Muppets? I’d likely be either Statler or Waldorf. Although hopefully not as wrinkly.
    3. Hearing: Having heard my own voice a lot (doing voice-overs for Qwest), I am slightly used to it, but always surprised to hear people say I ‘have a voice for radio’. Yeah, well, Mister, I may have a FACE for radio, too, but I don’t wanna hear about it!

  5. 4. Touching: touchy-feely all the way – although when I’m coiffed and lipstick-ed, DON’T GRAB MY HEAD AND KISS ME ON THE LIPS. Pet peeve. A lot of work goes into my ‘cleaned up’ look.
    5. Smelling: Cartier’s Le Baiser du Dragon is my winter scent (although I’m not convinced it’s ‘me’) and I spent most of the summer enjoying ‘Ralph’ by Mr. Lauren himself – light, crisp and fruity. Just like me.

  6. 1. When I was at the Museum of Modern Art in New York I saw some incredible stuff. The dozens and dozens of Picasso’s they had were amazing. What blew me away the most though was “Starry Night” by Van Gogh.

    2. Animal! He’s a drummer and so am I.

    3. Nasaly(Is that a word?) Like I’m from Fargo or something.

    4. Not touchy feely at all. I grew up in a big family where I always felt crowded. So now I think I just need A larger “personal Space” than most.

    5. It’s a cologne called “Woods” from Abercrombie and Fitch. Smells Clean. I like clean smells. Like a soapy, shower fresh scent.
