Friday Fives

Friday Fives

1 You’re making a CD mix titled, “The Soundtrack of My Life.” Which songs would you include, and why?
“Rosalita” by Springsteen, “Lethal Injection” by Slim Cessna, “Gloria” by Van Morrison, “I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry” by Hank Williams, “Don’t Stop Believin'” by Journey, “You Never Even Call Me By My Name” by John Conelly, “Sweet Home Chicago” by The Blues Brothers, “The Harder They Fall” by Jimmy Cliff, “He Stopped Loving Her Today” by George Jones, and “Time Bomb” by The Old 97s. Each of these songs has a poignant moment – work, school, Army or friendship – tied to them and hearing them brings a full playback of times past.

2. What is your favorite song right now? Two years ago? In college?
I can’t stop singing “I Hope That I Don’t Fall in Love With You ” by Tom Waits, so I guess right now that is my favorite song. Two years ago? “Lonesome Day” by Springsteen. In college, it was “Psycho Killer” by the Talking Heads .

3. You’re feeling down, sad, lonely, frustrated, angry … which song[s] do you play to help yourself feel better?
“On The Road Again” by Willie Nelson, anything by The Blues Brothers or The Old 97s and of course, Springsteen’s “Rosalita” – any live version that lasts about 10 minutes of feel good rock and roll.

4. Do you watch any of the competitive reality TV shows Why/why not? Do you have a favorite to win any one of the competitions?
Only “Last Comic Standing,” which NBC, in its wisdom this year, cancelled before revealing the winner. How lame is that?

5. Do most of your friends generally share your taste in music?
Most of my friends either hate or just barely tolerate Springsteen. Lono likes Dylan, perhaps more than me and Ed and I have a deep affinity for old, old school country music. But generally my tastes are all my own. But that won’t stop me from foisting them upon you, so beware.

  2. Good Lord—Could you possibly make these any harder?

    1″The Soundtrack of My Life.”
This is thought provoking, and I can’t do it justice here. I do know that my theme song is “Best Imitation of Myself” (http://benfolds.bluni.com/display.php?songid=43). It speaks to how life makes you step into characters, who may or may not actually be you.

    2. What is your favorite song right now? Two years ago? In college?
Right now, I love that Snow Patrol song, “Run,” and I love that gimmicky Bowling for Soup song “Preoccupied with 1985,” which is very amusing. Two years ago. . . 2002. . . . .pass. Nothing comes to mind. In college—probably “Brilliant Mistake,” by Elvis C.

  3. 3. You’re feeling down, sad, lonely, frustrated, angry … which song[s] do you play to help yourself feel better?
Actually, when I’m feeling down, I try to find music that will make me feel even worse (I’m kooky that way!). Three favorites for accomplishing this task, Willy Nelson’s “Blue Eyes Crying in The Rain,” Johnny Cash’s “Sunday Morning Coming Down,” and Ryan Adams, “La Cienega Just Smiled.”

    4. Do you watch any of the competitive reality TV shows Why/why not? Do you have a favorite to win any one of the competitions?
Does Iron Chef count? If so, never count out the Iron Chef—like all true champions, they *find* a way to win.

  4. 5. Do most of your friends generally share your taste in music?
I have a really unique, eclectic, adventurous, near-perfect taste in music, that I share wtih no one else. IÂ’ve gone searching for people on myspace.com who share my tastes, and out of 8 million profiles, came up blank. I love everything from oldest of old-school country, to the latest noisy dissonant powerpop.

  5. 1 You’re making a CD mix titled, “The Soundtrack of My Life.” Which songs would you include, and why?

Hook in her Head – Throwing Muses, When 3 is 2 – Hammerbox, Hard Nut to Crack – Karen Black, Oh! – The Breeders, for Grrrrrl angst.
The rest would be too eclectic to ever work into a smooth mix: Siouxsie, Bach, Bob Dylan, Alkaline Trio, The Cure, Green Day, Wanda Jackson, Kim Lenz, Slim Cessna, Wagner, Berlioz, Bauhaus, Outkast, Eminem, Spacemen 3, Spiritualized, Patsy Cline, Chris Isaak, Dandy Warhols, Radiohead, Hank Williams Senior, Metallica, Sarah McLaughlin, Curve, Kitchens of Distinction, This Mortal Coil, Loop, Luscious Jackson, The Pixies, the list goes on and on.

  6. 2. What is your favorite song right now? Two years ago? In college?
Can’t get Calling All Angels by Jane Siberry out of my head right now….Two years ago, Hmmm, that’s tough, probably I’m Dying Tomorrow – Alkaline Trio. College? Well since it took me almost 8 years to meander my way through college, it’s impossible to narrow down.

    3. You’re feeling down, sad, lonely, frustrated, angry … which song[s] do you play to help yourself feel better? IÂ’m with the Rev., I tend to listen to music that Supersizes those lonely, sad feelingsÂ….what I listen to depends on the specific anger or sadness.

    4. Do you watch any of the competitive reality TV shows Why/why not? Do you have a favorite to win any one of the competitions?
IÂ’m vapid, soÂ…yes. AmericaÂ’s Next Top Model!!! No winner picked yet.

    5. Do most of your friends generally share your taste in music? I think our group is too eclectic to compare.

    3. Anything by Skinny Puppy as they typically cheer me up.

    4. Sadly, I got sucked into He’s A Lady. After Amish in the City (not competitive, but fascinating!) this is my second “reality” experience. I don’t know who’s going to win as it just started & almost all of them are horrid looking women. It is humorous though.

    5. I hope not. It’s good to have a basis to start with, but far more intriguing to learn of & explore new music recommended by trusted sources!

    5. I think we can all find some common ground when
talking 1 on 1. Even the Rev. Ed

  13. Eye of Hurricane by David Wilcox. This guy is a gem. I think of him as a little bit of a cross between James Taylor (I :heart” JT!!) and Warren Zevon.
