Friday Fives

1. Flu season is around the corner. How do you handle the seasonal head cold?
Zicam usually. And I supplement with a preemptive Tylenol and a saline nasal spray. I generally don’t too run down with a cold, but I have had a few multi-day bed rests in the past. Hopefully this year will be better. I am a firm believer in the flu shot and will take one again this year.

2. Apirin? Tylenol? Motrin? Which side of the line are you on?
Tylenol Liquid Gel Caps work great for me – like a little pain relieving manna from health care heaven.

3. What was your favorite meal served at your elementary school?
Homemade hamburgers featured homemade buns. There was something about their taste – real home cooking, like grandma made. Wait a minute, grandma did make them. Ahhh, the sweet joy of a small town.

4. One preseason game is out of the way. Do the Broncos stand a chance this year?
I honestly don’t pay any attention to preseason. One of my employees lent me a football season preview magazine, but it sits on my desk unread. I have no idea what the team’s chances are. But the sports writers all seem united on the prospect that Tatum Bell is going to have a great season at running back, which is good news.

5. What does your mom do to make you cry?
When she talks lovingly and honestly about my father and he life since his passing. (Go ahead kids, try and top that.)

  1. 1. What a buzzkill you are Nall. Getting me all worked up about colds in the midst of a beautiful late-summer. IÂ’m also a Zicam fan. It seems to reduce the severity of colds. I also push the fluids (. . .) take my vitamins, and wash my hands frequently.

    2. One aspirin a day for my heart. Tylenol for hangovers. Motrin for when I want to tear up the lining of my stomach and irritate my ulcer.

    3. The food at my elementary school cafeteria verged on inedible. Every year, before Thanksgiving theyÂ’d make roast turkey, which was a huge hit in that it was one of the few vaguely edible things theyÂ’d serve all year. My lunch box got quite a workout the four years I was there.

    4. A relatively tough schedule (the Chargers, Chiefs and Raiders–three teams with legitimate playoff hopes–each play the Broncos twice this season, and the Jets, Patriots and Eagles are some tough non-conference foes) , and a lot of unknowns in terms of personnel make me think 10-6 is an optimistic prediction. Oh, and theyÂ’ll lose in the first round of the playoffs. Again. Nice going Shanahan.

    5. I can only think of one time. . . . we were both very mournful at my grandmotherÂ’s (momÂ’s mom) funeral. Otherwise, our family shuns emotion. It saves a fortune on hankies.

  2. !) I tend to keep my doses of Vitamin C & Cod Liver Oil the same year round with my multivitamin to avoid getting sick. IF Fom brings something home, I refuse to kiss him & this also helps.

@) Advil all the way, baby.

#) Honestly, I can’t remember. There were very few times I had to eat school food as my parents allowed me to make & take my own lunches.

$) I’ve no idea & don’t plan on getting one. The Broncos play football, right?

%) The only time my mother has made me cry was when my sister passed away & cried herself. I can’t stand the sight of my mother in emotional distress & am thankful she doesn’t often suffer from it.

  3. 1. Lots of liquids, over the counter medicines. and lots of whining.

    2. Aleve and Aspirin baby!! Tylonol is useless and I have a bit of an immunity to Motrin due to the copious amounts I took for my knee in my youth.

    3. I also loved the mystery meat. The spaghetti was uninspired, but it didn’t suck and you got garlic bread with it. Grandma quit working in the lunch room by the time I got to first grade, so I didn’t get the good food. I absolutely hated the potato buds and glow in the dark gravy of my youth.

    4. Don’t know. I like watching the games, but don’t obsess over these types of questions.

    5. When she cries I cry it’s as simple as that.

  4. 1. Water, hot water, liquor, washing of hands, and hope for the best. Oh and cold eeze.
    2. Whatever Edward uses!
    3. Ugh, we always had whatever Mom made us, no bought lunches for us. Though in college it was shephard’s pie (mmmmmmm).
    4. What?
    5. Golly she’s a great lady, she makes me cry because of her great faith.

  5. 1. Before this flu season, I’d usually just stay away from sick people. Hmm. Guess I can scratch that regimen.
    2. When the hangover is really bad, Tylenol with Codeine (thank you, Canada!). However for most minor aches and pains, Advil Liqui-gels work great. Oh, and so does Percocet.
    3. CORN DOGS!
    4. What.
    5. Be ill. I’m not sure that I’m prepared for seeing her in this state when I visit Texas next month.

  6. 1. I don’t get head colds often, so I guess extra vitamin C, rest & liquids. I’ve never tried Zicam, but I think I will if need be this year.

    2. Advil liquigels although for my stomach’s sake I’m trying to curtail my usage. 81 mg. of aspirin per day.

    3. The food wasn’t too bad at Glendower Prep in London. I remember weird Brit desserts like semolina & treacle.

    4. Hard to say this early in the season, depends on injuries, etc.

    5. The last time my mom made me cry was when she was upset, it hurt to see it.
