Friday Fives

1. How would you describe the style of furniture in your home right now? Mishmash. A few old swivel rockers that have seen better days and a comfy cheap couch that the cat has scratched up. But it naps just right.

2. Do you have a piece of your childhood bedroom furniture in your home? No. What an interesting question. I have very little left of my childhood room. Toys, furniture, even the room itself are gone.

3. What’s the oldest piece of furniture that you own?I have a few lamps and a table that my grandfather made when my mother was very young. That is probably my oldest furniture.

4. Have you ever tried making a piece of furniture by hand? What about refinishing?I made a nice computer desk and printer stand from scratch once with my father. It was a fun project and although it wasn’t perfect, the mahoganny finish turned out very nice and I was proud of it. It is gone now. It didn’t make the cut in a move years ago.

5. If we looked right now, what would we most likely find on your living room coffee table? What about on the nightstand in your bedroom?Magazines, books. A few napkins. A few Netflix DVD envelopes. Three remote controls. It’s glass table top smudged from the dog’s habit of sitting on top of it.

  1. Were these tailormade for me or what?

    1. Lessee.. . . .my current decorating style is a lot of Danish modern, with a lot of warm, old-world accents. Yes. That’s how I describe it.
    2. I do not. I have two thing in my bedroom of childhood interest, however. I have an old chair from my grandparent’s house that–despite being uncomfortable–holds fond memories. I also still keep my binky (under lock and key–rarely on display) which is very dear to me.
    3. Probably my dining room table. Not too old, but chock full of memories. My grandmother and mom used to sit at that table, listening to the casualties on the radio to see if their husband, father, or brother had died that day in WWII. Much has happened around that table.

  2. 4 I’m not much of a “builder,” but I have refinished quite a few pieces in my day. My beloved booze table was a patina’ed black mess before Homer Formby and I busted out some refinishing whuppass on it. Still pleased with the results.
    5. Living Room: coasters and back issues of the brilliant “Modern Drunkard.” Bedroom: A stack of various books–ranging from totally intellectual, to totally silly. I’m a boy with diverse interests. *And* I know how to read.

    6. I’m kinda drunk. Does it show?

  3. 1. Early college, but with furniture that matches a little bit more than any I had when actually in college.

    2. Yes, I have a dresser, and a rocking chair.

    3. The antique cherry rocking chair mentioned above, and the secretary I inherited from my grandmother.

    4. I refinished an old iron bed frame once. I stripped off all of the old paint and repainted it. It turned out pretty good, but was a weird size and I couldn’t find a mattress to fit it.

    5. I moved the netflix dvd’s Roy alluded to earlier, there are remote controls, magazines and a couple of coasters. The night stand has 3 books two remote controls, a Goofy phone, a lamp, 2 coasters, and an alarm clock.

  4. 1. “Eclectic.” Yes…that word will do just fine. I have yet to pay for a single item of furniture because people feel sorry for me a lot of the time. I don’t know why, but I’ll keep takin’ their furniture.

    2. No childhood furniture, no. Oddly enough, I can’t even remember my bedroom in IL.

    3. Thom’s got some ancient Catholic stuff from the Vatican, but I think the oldest piece of furnitue I own is my bedframe. It’s IKEA! I slept on it in San Francisco about 7.5 years ago & now I own it. Fun, huh?

    4. I attempted to make a table once & the end result was “art.”

    5. My living room cube (no room for a table) is cluttered with remote controls & water glasses. Swing away, Merrill…swing away.

  5. 1. we have a few nice 50’s pieces (blond wood & bizarre green), ethan allen end tables, sofamart microfiber couch & other miscellany. eclectic, i suppose.

    2. no, but the dollhouse that my grandfather built for me is still at my folks’ place.

    3. furniture from the 50’s

    4. i was pretty tragic in shop class (nearly sawed off my pinky), but i did manage to make a candle sconce that is still on my gramma’s wall

    5. sadly, we had to store our coffee table to make the place more “show friendly”

  6. 1.) Retro meets contemporary? Yeah, that’ll do. A lot of clean lines and really bold colors. It looks like a crayola box exploded in our house!

2.) Nope. My parents–in their infinite wisdom–purchased us each a full bedroom set to “help us when we moved out on our own”. I joined the military in 1987 and upon my return, learned that my parents had sold my bedroom set. Thanks folks!!!!!

3.) Hmmmmmmm. I think it’s our bed. Robert and I bought it WAY back when we first met, and it’s lasted all these years. It’s been a fine piece of sturdy craftmanship…..if you know what I mean 😉

4.) yes. I’ve made a few shelves and refinished the dresser in our bedroom, which used to be white-washed in this horrid Santa Fe style.

5.) A Parisian decorating book, a book about Maryland, and a few coasters. On the nightstand: a lamp, alarm clock and nothing else. Everything “fun” and interesting is either on the floor or under the bed………

  7. 1. Our furniture style is somewhere between 50’s and mission. Our plan is to go fully atomic, lounge and tiki when we’re in a house. Although the nice thing about mission furniture is that you can beat the shit out of it and it only looks more authentic. However, before you operate our drawer pulls, please have tetanus boosters on file.
    2. I do! I have my wicker elephant that was purchased for me when I was 3 and thought to die from pneumonia (odd ‘gift of death’, don’t you think?). I also have the bed I slept in as a youngster – it’s in the storage unit. I don’t even want to think of all the crap my parents are saving at their house.
    3. It’s hard to say exactly how old it is, but my mahogany desk (wrapped in a tarp off the bedroom balcony) is at least 100 years old, along with my bedframe in the storage unit – both belonged to my great great grandmother.
    4. I’ve never tried to make furniture on my own – that would be unsettlingly unwise. However, we did saw the legs off th

  8. the Corona table in the living room to make it more ‘coffee table’-like.
    5. Aforementioned coffee table has the tiki lamp Eddie got for Adam for a bday one year.. and a stack of magazines.. and leather coasters from Chile brought to us by Pamela.. and wooden cock coasters from Sara (I think also brought to us from Chile). As for the bedside table, a stack of books (too lazy to look), a plant, my laundry quarters, a change bank, and other crap I care not to mention. It will only draw attention to my affinity for clutter.
