Friday Fives

1. Have you ever stayed in a hostel? If so, where? Did you like it? If you haven’t stayed in a hostel, would you?

I have not, although I did get at one once in Stuttgart but I am not going into all those details because I am just a teasing minx.

2. What is your favorite airport that you’ve been to? Why?

La Guardia. It took several years and I flew through there a number of times during the renovations and it was a big ol’ mess. But two years ago I had a long layover there and it is magnificent. A great mall, great seating. great views of the bay and the runways and some spectacular people watching.
I did not get laid at the airport however.

3. What is the best museum you have visited on vacation?

This sounds lame or maybe quaint but there is this tiny museum and historic farm display in Dixon/Savpru, WY just a bit down the road to the east of Baggs, WY.

4. Have you ever made friends while traveling whom you keep in touch with on a regular basis?

No I haven’t. Most of my encounters on the road or random strangers at the bar stool or beach chair next to me and the conversation tends to be very superficial.

5. Have you ever had a conversation with a seatmate on a plane?

I have. The Southwest flights from Denver to Kansas City tend to have some of the same folks on them and occasionally you end up sitting next to them and have those “well look who’s here” kind of vibe. Coming back from Kansas City once I sat next to a kid from a small Missouri town going to Steamboat to mountain biking and climbing. He was full of amazement about being out ‘In The Real World.”

  1. 1) Never stayed in one. I don’t think it’s for me.

    2) Frankfurt. It’s like a gigantic city. Three stories and everything you could ever want or need available.

    3) The hermitage in St Petersburg is amazing. Second largest art museum in the world.

    4) Nope. I’ve had fantastic adventures with varying people but none have withstood the test of time.

    5) Yes on several occasions. It’s been very entertaining and sometimes frightening.

  2. 1. I have not stayed in a hostel. I don’t think I’d be comfortable with that much communal sharing of space. (Although getting stoned and having sex with foreign strangers does hold a certain appeal.)

    2. Munich. It is the best designed most efficient airport I’ve ever been through. International connection with only twenty minutes to spare? Not a problem.

    3. (Jealous that Greg has been the Hermitage). That’s a tough one. While fairly unremarkable for the most part, the Reina Sofia in Madrid is the home of Picasso’s Guernica. On the morning of my visit, I was second in line to get in, had studied the gallery maps, and made a beeline to Sala 205.10. I had Guernica to myself for almost ten minutes.

    4. That’s a big fat no. On an airplane I act as unapproachable and aloof as I possibly can. I don’t want to hear, smell or talk to my neighbors. I have met a handful of cool people on planes, but those acquaintances were ephemeral.

    5. It is rare for me to engage in conversations with seatmates. While I don’t ooze friendliness I am respectful, because you never know who you’ll be seated next to. For example I once flew from London to San Francisco seated near Gwyneth Paltrow, and I managed to neither berate nor slap her the duration of the flight. Go me!
