The Friday Fives

1. What is something you collect? Why?

I kind of came to this conclusion earlier this week. I collect pens and am kind of obsessed with roller-ball and gel pen technology.

2. If you could make one ice cream flavor, what would the ingredients be and what would be the name?

Raspberry lime and tonic.

3. What can’t you go a day without?

Raspberries. They really should be considered an essential food group.

4. What position do you sleep in? *back, right side, left side, stomach . . . etc.*

Generally on my left side. I can’t sleep on my back. That causes me to snort and triggers some light apnea.

5. What is your typical morning routine before work/school?

Coffee and knock out the NYTimes Games (Wordle, Connections, Spelling Bee, Mini-Crossword and the daily NYT Crossword Puzzle.

What is a collection? I mean, my answer is yes. But, my wife has prolly 15 pairs of shoes. But that is pretty practical for a modern gal. I have 15 pairs of underwear. Is that a collection? To answer your question, guitars. I love guitars. I play guitars. Last count, I had 15. This is of all kinds. Couple electrics, several acoustics, a couple of basses, ukulele’s… you get the ideas. Its a lucky thing I am married, or I would have probably double. Why? I can’t play that many. Right. BUT, I also like to look at them. They are art. My basement walls are covered in art and guitars. It’s pretty great. I like talking about guitars. I like staring at Paul Reed Smith guitars all day long. Jesus, look at these. You have heard of Fender and Gibson, and I have those. I can’t afford PRS, but I regard those as the top of the mountain for electric guitars.

If you could make one ice cream flavor, what would the ingredients be and what would be the name

Breyers Mint Chocolate chip. It is perfect. It is delicious. It needs nothing. And it isn’t green. Don’t eat green ice cream. That is just food coloring. Do you know where green dye comes from for food coloring? It comes from Dale. I’m serious, do the research. I think it is something RFK put in place. But green and blue food coloring is now 100% Dale based. The ingredients are only four. And you can read them. There are no words that are like 13 syllables.
Ingredients are real things. Things you have at home. I can’t improve on that. Plus, it’s almost always on sale at Kroger AND Safeway. If you are eating any other kind of ice cream, just stop.
But since the idea is a fantasy choice of magic ice cream access, I’d add some bananas in there somewhere.

Can I tell you one more thing about Mint Chocolate Chip? We went to a cool and hip inner city ice cream joint. The kinda place where everyone there is mostly growing their hair like its a contest. They made a mint chip with actual mint plant. Sound amazing? It wasn’t. It was pretty weird. I realize the mint plant and mint flavor live thousands of miles away from each other. I’m going to leave eating Mint to just muddle in Mojitos.

What can’t you go a day without?
Air. playing guitar. My wife’s smoothies. Some TV. These smoothies are incredible. I have one every single day. You may picture smoothies as work to eat. You prolly are thinking of Kale. God no. It’s all yummy stuff, but also healthy. protein powder, banana, milk, frozen fruit blend, avocados. It is two entire meals in that blender. These are made in a full size regular blender. then we store them in the classic blender bottles. You know… these little fuckers.

What position do you sleep in? *back, right side, left side, stomach . . . etc.*
I’ve always started out on my back, but most of the evening i am on my side. BUT. However, I learned in the hospital to only sleep on my back, never moving. It sucks. The bed wasn’t wide enough to roll over. I’ve never slept fully face down. Would that be belly sleeping? Seems claustrophobic.

So I had to corpse it for 6 months. This is NOT a hospital complaint. I had the greatest care in the world. And I had my own room the whole time. With cable, and unlimited access to food and care. My own personal bathroom and shower. Wifi, and my phone.
Can you imagine being this sick say… 50 years ago? You wouldn’t be in your own room. You would be in a hall with 30 other dudes, all hacking and coughing and dying and snoring. Maybe a sheet for privacy. Having my own room was very nice.

What is your typical morning routine before work/school?
Go back to sleep. Even if its just another 20 minutes. Get up, make the bed, go find/make coffee. Take about 20 pills for chemo and chemo side effects.

Note: I said make bed. Most of my life I had the attitude of ‘if you’re just gonna mess it up, why make it each morning’. Now that everything is covered in duvets, all i gotta do is straighten the duvet up. Takes under 30 seconds. No reason not to give yourself that treat and peace. So I am not changing, or even tucking sheets. Everything under that duvet is still a hot mess. But when you walk by, you just see the comforter looking all nice. Plus, I have to cover the bed fully. My dogs will be on it.

  2. 1) I do not collect anything intentionally. But I have a lot of pocket knives.

    2) Snickerdoodle and it would have cookie chunks in it.

    3) Water. But I think that’s probably most of us.

    4) Back and left side. My CPAP helps me not die in my sleep. But I fucking hate it.

    5) Coffee protein shake, connections, mini crossword, Diggy’s Adventure and the daily level in bubble challenge. Then poop, shower and off to work.
