Friday Fives

1. What is your earliest memory of snow? ,
I grew up in snow land. Craig is the birthplace of snow, the veritable headwater of frozen tundra. I think one of the very earliest was a sledding out at a special sledding hill in town, called Cathy Cesar hill.

2. Big storms like this… curse, or joy?
Today, joy. Last night, curse. I stayed in a hotel with a work crew and it was a lot of work accounting for everybody. But the short drive in from the hotel made the morning a joy. .

3. Favorite snow memory, worst snow memory
I love the snow and snowy days. Best memory was a Boy Scout winter camping trip when we dug snow caves and slept in them. Worst snow memory – driving from Gunnison to Grand Junction to see grandma and durable Le Mans nearly wrecked off the side of a mountain pass after hitting a patch of black ice. I spun end o

4. Would you rather fight Mike Tyson OR talk like him?
I go with talkin’. The champ has a very massive right punch and can still do some clobberin’. Did you see on the news that the idiot got popped for DUI and cocaine possession? He is now in the Tyrone Braxton club – an organization whose ranks seem to be growing.

5. well, it looks like you aren’t going anywhere for the next few days… what is your plan? Do you have any blizzard rituals?
Snow day rituals? Mostly a total veg fest in front of the tube and usually cooking something, stew, green chili or soup.

  1. !) My first memory of snow was from when my family was snowed into a motel in Kansas on our way from IL to CO for Xmas in the early 80s.

@) Big snow storms are a joy to me.

#) My favorite snow memory was being snowed in with Thom in Denver’s blizzard of 2003! I think my worst snow memory would be anytime I had to drive in the stuff because of all the idiots on the road (especially those in SUVs).

$) I’d rather talk like Mike Tyson because his voice makes me laugh & I like to make people laugh.

%) My blizzard rituals include stocking up on booze (particularly wine), tea & coffee + DVDs & then ensuring everyone I love is safe & sound. Sadly, it’s 50 degrees in NYC today with lots of sun. We haven’t had a single flurry since Thom & I have lived here & I find that depressing.

  2. 1. What is your earliest memory of snow?

I grew up in Phoenix, so I have no early memories of snow. If I think way way way back, I remember a Christmas spent back in Buffalo at Grandma & Grandpa’s house on Grimsby. It was Christmas eve and we got a snow… probably not unusual for Buffalo. I was so excited I went out in the street and wrote ‘Merry Christmas’ in footprints in the snow. I was rather dismayed to see as soon as I finished it was totally covered over in fresh snow. Being from Phoenix, I clearly wasn’t up on the thermo dynamic properties of snow.

    2. big storms like this… curse, or joy?

joy! Fortunately, I am off work on vacation for tonight’s & tomorrow’s and Saturday’s snow storm. So, I can chill here and watch movies and keep the driveway shoveled. Since I have the largest truck on the planet, getting around in these storms has not yet proven to be a problem (yet). Also, since I grew up in the mohave desert, I still get super excited every time it snows.

    3. Favorite snow memory, worst snow memory

favorite would be that one mentioned above with my mom and grandparents. Worst maybe this one, as I was trapped. See, last week I was supposed to fly to sunny Phoenix to spend Christmas with the fam. That blizzard closed the airport so we couldn’t leave. We decided to just drive. Without much planning, we hopped in the truck and drove out 15 hours as soon as they opened the road.

Then, while having an excellent vacation in Arizona we learned of this current blizzard. We had no warning and had to high tail it back to Denver ASAP cutting our vacation short(er) to avoid this storm. The drives were fine and we had an amazing vacation. However, weather made everything a HUGE pain in the ass… and chopped two days off our vacation.

    4. Would you rather fight Mike Tyson or talk like him?

Um, the first. After the serious and proper ass kicking I received (deservedly)… I would heal. That voice thing is forever though.

    5. well, it looks like you aren’t going anywhere for the next few days… what is your plan? Do you have any blizzard rituals?

I sure do, as this is now my fourth big storm since we got here almost ten years ago. Firstly, I stock up on DVDs and booze. Secondly, I then consume those things just mentioned above. That is pretty much the whole strategy. Oh, I also do some rescue stuff inevitably driving around, so I keep the truck stocked with: a full tank of gas, tow rope, portable battery charger, wool blanket, army shovel, road flares, and probably some other crap. Most important: a full tank of fuel. I can’t emphasize this enough as a safety tip.

  3. 1. It was the winter of 1975 in San Franciso and it snowed. It was the first time I’d seen snow and it lasted for about an hour in the morning…..i remember it because it froze the plums off our tree in the front yard!
    2. If i don’t have to work they are a joy………I love them, I love the quiet that they bring and the clean feeling they leave!
    3. My favorite snow memory is from when I was a child and it had snowed something like 8 feet in steamboat in 1978…..the entire city was buried, and the snow was piled up around the streets like mountains, to an 8 year old it was glorious and the entire town was my empire.
    4. I already fight like him so now I just need his voice……and his teeth……..mmmm ears
    5. Movies, potatoe chips, liquor (though I’m off the stuff now), internet is essential, 4 cats (minimum) and Edward if he’s behaving.

  4. 1)Playing hockey on our homemade backyard rink in Michigan and it snowing.
2)if I am home gift if I am at work SUCK!!
3)Fav: palying king of the hill on ginormous mountains of snow in the parking lots of malls in Minnesota.
Worst: frined sliding off pile of snow on the side of the road while walking to school and getting run over and killed by a bus.
4)I would whoop Mike Tysons ASS!
5)gotta go to work don’t get to tell people that 911 is closed due to the weather.

  5. 1. No clue what my earliest memory of snow might be. I grew up in a snowy hellhole called “Craig.” I have a few [photograph enhanced] memories of building snow forts and snow men, but nothing concrete.

    2. Generally they are a curse. I drive 20 miles each way to work, uphill, in a snowstorm, so storms can seriously fuck up my karma.

    3. Best memory/memories. . . .The blizzard of 97 was awesome, tons of fun, friends, drinks, and comaraderie. This last blizzard will also go down as a very pleasant memory. . . best snow days ever.

As for the worst, there was that whole “slipping on the ice and briefly dying” thing earlier in this year. I’ll go with that one.

    4. Goodness–given my history of head injuries, I’ll go with the funny voice. (And plus I sound a lot like him anyway).

    5. My plan is/was to stock up on booze and food, and find a hottie to snuggle up with, watching team coverage.
