Friday Fives

1 Egg nog or snogging under the mistletoe
Well, I am a loner, and a boozer. Bring on the nog. If all goes well, I can have the snogging as well. hic.
2. What songs (other than Christmas themed songs) make you think of Christmas or the holidays?
U2s “I Still Haven’t Found What I Am Looking For” and Journey’s “Open Arms.”
3. Would You Rather… fight to the death The Rock -or- fifteen clones of Barbara Bush?
Hmm. The Rock kicks ass. I am not familiar with his athleticism as practiced in his “Professional Wrestling” career. But I am a fan of his movies where he generally kicks butt. Knowing that I think Babs is the bet. She is a bit shrill but I think at 80+ years old even 15 of her would be easy to know down.
4. Any favorite Christmas memories to share? What was the best Christmas you ever had?
There have been many, but I remember a very bad blizzard one Christmas and we were slated to drive to Rifle for the Holiday at Grandmas and instead we turned around and came back and had Christmas dinner, prepared from wonderful items from the Circle K. I loved the comraderie and spirit of our family on that day.
5. And to be fair – any Christmas disasters? What was the worst Christmas you ever had?
I suppose the year my grandfather died on Christmas eve or a day or two before. However I was just barely 5 and hardly remember any of it. I don’t get to caught up in Christmas, so there aren’t many disasters I can recall. I tend to go with the flow.

  1. 1. I am not the biggest eggnog fan, but boy do I love snogging (is that even a word?).

    2. There is always “My Favorite Things” from “The Sound of Music,” but that is too easy. How about, “It’s the End of the World as We Know It” by REM?

    3. Okay, if I’m allowed a bowling trophy, I would definitely want the challenge. . . Oh, who am I kidding we all want to bash Babs and to get to do it 15 times: That’s what I call Christmas.

    4. 1982, we went to Grand Junction, just for the day. We came home to find that our obese neighbor had plowed the results of the blizzard into our yard. We had to dig our way into the house. I was young (16) and actually found it quite amuzing. It took a week to dig out my car, Roy’s car and dad’s truck. (Dad bought a snow blower as soon as the stores opened.)

    5. Mom decided that she would make spaghetti for Christmas Eve dinner. She was carrying the sauce to the table when somehow she lost control. It was slow motion. Mom went one way and the sauce went tumbling through the air. It spattered everywhere. We spent the evening washing curtains, mopping the floor, scrubbing the wall, and treating mom for first degree burns. As for Roy’s answer being more tragic, it was but I was only 3 and don’t remember it at all.

  2. !) I’m going with snogging under the mistletoe because it doesn’t make me cramp like eggnog does.

@) Sarah McLachlan’s “Full Of Grace” & “Song For A Winter’s Night.” I’ve no idea why but they both bring a tear to my eye when I hear them & remind me of Christmas. I am such a Lilith lesbo.

#) I’ve an odd crush on The Rock & it’s my belief that he’s bisexual so I’m going to fight him to the death & in the process, make him my bitch & then demand he spare my life so he may live subserviently with me.

$) Thus far, the best Xmas was last Xmas because it’s the freshest in my memory. *This* one’s going to be weird without any family or being in Winter Wonderland Colorado. Thom, Euterpe, Isabella, Odin, Thor & I are going to make the most of it & boy howdy, rock NYC more than that adulteress Mary screaming in a manger.

%) I can’t think of any “disasters” per se but my mother, father, brother & I were trapped in a motel in Kansas one year for Xmas due to a blizzard. I don’t recall much about it though as I was a wee nip of a lad at the time.

  3. 1. How about snogging *in* eggnog? That sounds festively messy.

    2. Anything from the Sound of Music. Sigur Ros and (oddly enough) Dream Academy always make me think of winter wonderlands.

    3. I’d rather rock out my go-go-gadget powers on The Babs’.

    4. The blizzard of ’82 was a blast….my brother and I developed a huge tunnel system between our house in Niwot and our neighbors. In retrospect, maybe I should have been a civil engineer.

    5. The first Christmas in Singapore was a little weird. I missed the snow and was just not buying the decorated palm tree and weird Chinese “Christmas cookies.”

  4. 1) Nog…I find the Mistletoe contrite and a stupid* tradition that makes more people uncomfortable, than it does make them randy. Merry friggin’ Christmas. Anyway, I like nog.

    2) Put a little love in your heart by Al Green. I always think of Bill Murray from Scrooged. Nothing stupid* about this song.

    3) Grog crush Barbara. My only hope is that here stupid sons show up to help and I can kick their ass as well…stupid* Bushes.

    4) I have many good memories of Christmases past…I do believe there is one Christmas that, in my sleepy dream state, I convinced my brother that I saw Santa’s sleigh up in the sky. Stupid* brother.

    5) The Christmas during my parents divorce, when my Dad chose to use Christmas to tell us and all the neighborhood I grew up in, all these bad things about my Mom. Stupid* Dad and bring on the therapy.

    * Disclaimer – I do not think Christmas is stupid, nor do I think these questions are stupid. The word “stupid” just became my theme in this blog and being in advertising I feel the need to disclaim anything that may in anyway offend you or allow for possible legal action. 5. I am laughing out loud at Tony’s list and reminded once again that I have been secretly in love with him for more than 16 years. (But I suppose it’s not much of a secret since I have been confessing it to everyone we know since the fall of 1989)

Merry Christmas my friends. I do miss you all so much.

Now, “Who wants a photo Christmas card?!”

  6. 1. I’m a lover and a lush, so can I have both?

    2. For whatever odd reason, I associate the Rolling Stones with Christmas. “Waiting on A Friend,” seems Christmas-y to me, as does the entire Metamophosis album. No idea why.

    3. If I protected my eyes and my groin, I could make quick work of the Barbara posse. Let’s face it, even though he is a Jew, the Rock is would kick my ass.

    4. When I was little, I was kind of an annoying, stubborn kid (hard to believe, I know). I made a habit of sleeping next to the tree (in my my totally cute tiger sleeping bag), in hopes of catching Santa in the act. Apparently I was also a heavy sleeper, as I never did catch him. However, waking up next to the tree, with the miraculous appearance of the gifts was a wonder that boggled my mind for years.

    5. No real disasters. I believe once when I was very little we celebrated christmas in a motel in Elko, Nevada. My recollections are very spotty though.

  7. 1 Egg nog or snogging under the mistletoe?

egg nog, with plenty of Brandy, Poindexter

    2. What songs (other than Christmas themed songs) make you think of Christmas or the holidays?

my favorite Christmas song is Joni Mitchell’s ‘River’.

    3. Would You Rather… fight to the death The Rock -or- fifteen clones of Barbara Bush? Hmm.

hmm, I am pro ‘The Rock’, and deathly afraid of Barbara Bush. In fact, how about the Rock (I call him Dwayne) and I against Barbara Bush? That is my offer to you, sir.

    4. Any favorite Christmas memories to share? What was the best Christmas you ever had?

at the risk of sounding super cheeky, every Christmas with my family around is the best. In fact, am here now after the great blizzard of 2006. Read on below.

    5. And to be fair – any Christmas disasters? What was the worst Christmas you ever had?

I can’t think of a worst, but I just had a doozy of an experience. See, I was supposed to fly into Phoenix yesterday for a relaxing week in Phoenix with the fam. Normally, we drive. However, since Southwest Airlines has come to Denver, our options are many. Anyhow, it was set to be a stellar Christmas, with family in from as far as Florida. The wife and I got snowed into Denver during the blizzard. The airport was closed, the airport is still closed. So, the second the Governor opened the freeways last night… we drove our asses here. 16 hours straight through, and my brain is mostly melted right now. Could not miss Christmas with the family. Am here safe and sound and couldn’t be happier.

    Merry Christmas!

  8. 1. I’ll go with the nog. We all want to find that special someone, but hanging with friends and drinking the night away by the roaring fire sounds pretty good to me right now.

    2. “Peace, Love And Understanding” or “Hungry Heart”.

    3. The Rock dosen’t scare me. I had 4 older brothers so I know how to take a beating. I’ll take the Rock over Babsy.

    4. 1976, the year before my family moved to Colorado, we took a road trip to Florida. 7 kids, Mom and Dad (my oldest brother was in the marine corps)in rented pasenger van. From Ohio to Florida to visit Gram and Gramps. Good times.

    5. Unfortunately this one. Too much to go into here. But I know I’ll catch the spirit after a couple of viewings of “It’s a Wonderful Life” and “A Christmas Story”.

    Happy Festivus Everyone!

  9. 1) NOG
    2) Soul Coughing, “You get the ankles I’ll get the wrists.”
    3) I would totally pimp slap Barbara
    4) Mine is a Christmas eve memory. Every year in Minnesota we would have the family dinner then meet up with about 100-150 friends at teh local outdoor rink and jimmy the lights on and play boot hockey untill about 1 am with a keg in the snowbank and tons of friends hooting and hollerin on the sides.
    5) There was that one when ninjas killed my dog but I am not allowed to talk about it, it is still in litigation.
