Friday Fives

1. Growing up, what was your favorite comic strip? As a younger child, “BC”. By my teen years, it was “Bloom County.” Currently it is “The Boondocks.”
2. Have you ever served on jury duty? What happened. Once in my journo years, I was called to jury duty and showed up at the courthouse. I was sitting on the jury and made it through two cuts. Then the defense attorney asked my occupation and asked if I could be objective. I said certainly, I could. That was followed by the DA, whom I knew pretty well. He simply stood and said, “Your honor, Mr. Nall is excused.” The judge, someone else I knew, merely smiled and me with a “told ya so” look and let me go.
3. What is your favorite bumper sticker or T-shirt expression? It is an imaginary bumber sticker that I crafted: “I am an Aborted Fetus, and I Vote.”
4. When leaving a room, do you turn off the lights or leave the lights on throughout the house when you are home? Why? I am a light turner offer. I hate brightly lit rooms at night and prefer lamp light.
5. What one word best describes your father (special bonus father’s day question.) Big-hearted.

    2. i did serve about two months ago. i basically sat around for 4 hours and read a book. er — TRIED to read a book. you see, i was bothered by this weirdo costume designer guy in a kilt the whole fucking time. then i got to walk home.

    GODDAMN SHIRT IN FRONT OF
    YOUR FUCKING KIDS?!
i also enjoy the onion one that says “Area Man”.
    4. i love having every light and every television in the house on at once.
    5. Angry.

  2. 1. Growing up I loved Prince Valient (spelling?)
    2. Yes twice, but like Reid I sat around and was bothered by freaks…..
    3. “This is your boyfriend’s shirt”
    4. I try to turn them off, when I was a kid my mom put stickers on every light switch that said “Turn me off”. My stickers now read “You turn me on”
    5. James T. Kirk (I know three words but true all the same)

  3. 1) I loved the sunday funnies growing up. I suppose BC was a favorite as well. I also read Steve Canyon (being a Idaho Springs hero and all that). Bloom County fallowed as well. But all time favorite became Calvin & Hobbes.

    2) No. Called once and was excused in the first cut. The fukkers guilty anyway!

3)Bush ’04…how’s that workin’ out for ya?

    4) Turn off, save money and love the planet.

    5) Survivor

  4. 1.) I liked Peanuts and Hagar the Horrible. Later in life I stumbled upon Calvin & Hobbes and all other comics shriveled away.

2.)I have. See Reid and Thom’s comments. Lots of reading and weird people watching.

3.) I saw this on a bumper some time ago and almost wrecked I was laughing so hard: JESUS IS MY AIRBAG. HAHAAHAHAHAAHAHAHAH!!!!!!!

4.) I’m a pretty energy-conscious guy, especially now that I own a home, so I try to conserve energy by turning all unecessary lights off.

    5.)Misguided

  5. !) I’d say Bloom County because it’s the only one I can think of besides Get Fuzzy which wasn’t around when I was a kid (I don’t think).

@) I have! Some white trash people were trying to sue their landlord for child abuse because he’d disciplined their child while they were “away.” We found the defendant not guilty & plaintiff’s idiotic.

#) “Frodo failed… Bush has the ring” is my current favorite.

$) I turn off the light of any room I’m not currently occupying. It drives Thom nuts at times.

%) Just one!? I’m going to go with: brave.

  6. 1. I loved Calvin & Hobbes and Bizarro World or whatever it was called. Made no sense to me at the time, but I liked Zippy anyway.

    2. I’ve been called several times, but only sat for a trial once, about 2 years ago. Synopsis of the trial: druggie girl-gangsta trash vs. drunk Mexican. Drunk Mexican found not guilty.

    3. I usually heartily dislike bumper stickers, but Keep Honking, I’m Reloading makes me laugh.

    4. Reid isn’t exaggerating, if he had his way, EVERY single light and television would be on. 24/7. Needless to say, I spend about 1/50th of my life following him around turning everything off.

    5. Random

  7. 1. Peanuts as a child then Calvin and Hobbs, currently Boodocks
    2. I was called up once in Craig, but my number never was picked, I was also called up in Greeley, but I actually did not live there any longer, so I didn’t have to serve.

    3. Jesus is coming…look busy.

    4. I try to turn them off, but I occasionally forget.

    5. hero

  8. 1. As a small child I liked BC for it’s simplicity and monosyllabic dialogue. Once I got old enough to see its blatantly Christian slant, I grew weary of it.

    2. I served on a jury once when I was in college. It was an assault and battery trial, where a white trash woman on a bender claimed her ex-husband had beaten her. The defendant was acquitted–but I found the process to be rather unsatisfying, as we jurors were more focused on interpreting law, as opposed to uncovering the truth.

    3. They usually don’t stick in my head very long. The only one that comes to mind is, “Free Tibet with every purchase.”

    4. In the winter months, I keep them on all the time. In the summer I’m more conservation-minded.

    5. quirky
