Friday Fives

1. What is the first song you remember hearing?
True story. My grandfather’s radio – at his home in Hayden, CO on a Sunday afternoon. It was playing the Billy Graham Radio Show and the song was his theme song – and inmemory, I swear it was :”How Great Though Art” but I was very young – we are talking three or four and the radio was old and that is what fascinated me and why I remember it.
Another very old song, memory was the theme song to Hawaii 5-O. I was always in bed early as a four and five year old, but this show would come on the television and I would run from my room to watch the opening credits and listen to the theme song. Then back off to work.

2. What is the first movie you remember seeing?
I remember watching Disney’s “Herbie – the Love Bug” during its original theater run. I was four at the time and recall taking in the entire movie theater experience.

3. What is the first book you remember reading?
“Cowboy Sam the Airplane.” A series of modern westerns for young readers. Cowboy Sam had an Indian companion and they traveled the American west of the 1940s and 1950s helping people and teaching us about the environment and human relations.

4. When did you first realize the world around you?
It was probably a family trip to Denver when I was about four or five. The entire driving to another place and seeing the city and realizing that there was life outside of Craig was a life changing event. But then again, when you are four or five, lots of things are life changing events – like discovering gravity

5. How should Carl Kipper celebrate his AIG rewards?
Carl is just learning to be a philanthropist. Giving lots of small amounts will be better for his sole, rather than one huge gift. I suggest he give a couple of hundred thousand to me as a start.

1.The first one that comes to mind is Ring of Fire by the late great Mr. Cash.

    2. I was largely deprived of movies as a kid. The only one I remember seeing was 101 Dalmations. Mother was especially dressed up for the event, and Glenn Close was scary as fuck.

    3. It was the long forgotten, albeit classic, “What Do The Animals Say?” I read it, memorized it, even recited it to strangers. Man, it was great to finally READ after years of taunting by my siblings.

    4. I never had proof of the outside world til

  4. 1. What is the first song you remember hearing?

West Virginia, Mountain Mama… that John Denver song. Don’t remember where I was, but I was a kid and we were somewhere in the woods. It seemed I was living that song, and it was a transcendent moment. I think it is a moment I try to relive every day living here in beautiful and amazing Colorado.

    2. What is the first movie you remember seeing?

Star Wars, vaguely. Movies haven’t really shaped me like books and music have. I mean, a few have rocked me to the foundation: Harold and Maude, and Forrest Gump to name a couple.

    3. What is the first book you remember reading?

five were missing, or mouse on a motorcycle. Though it has been 30 years, I have found those books as an adult and am super proud to own them. A couple of years ago, when I finally found a copy of ‘Five were Missing‘ i read it in the tub in an hour or two. It did not age well. It was a revolutionary piece of literary awesomeness… at the time. Today, it reads as something shit out in 90 minutes for 10 year olds.

    4. When did you first realize the world around you?

I remember feeling profoundly different and seperated from the world at a young age. Not alienated, mind you. I had an awesome and fun and perfect childhood. I just remember wondering why i thought so different from everyone. In retrospect, I turned out mostly normal. So, maybe everyone has those thoughts. I don’t know, I was afraid to talk about it. Plus, I think I may have saw a space ship when I was really young. Problem is, I can’t be sure if it was an actual occurance or maybe a show I saw. true story. You are the first person I have EVER told that to. So, don’t tell anyone.

    5. How should Carl Kipper celebrate his AIG rewards?

Carl was a hard worker. Carl bust his ass every single day why you sat in your cubile and played solitare. Carl is the reason any of us still have a job. So, let’s just quit the blame game and put his stapler in jello again.

  5. 1) It was either the Monkees or the Partridge Family, because my sister was a fan and that’s all she played on her record player.

    2) Lost Horizon – Which by the way is not a very kid-like movie, but I remember how friggin’ cool it was that the people trekked up into the mountains through snow and shit and went through the cool tunnel and viola! there was Shangri-la. Neverland eat shit, Shangri-La was the shiznitz.

    3) The one I actually remember reading all by myself was a Encyclopedia Brown book and yes, I was a smart little kidlet and yes, I was a dork even back then.

    4) Oh man, we were traveling before I can even remember. Heck every weekend of my young life was spent at the ski area and we had a house in Mexico when I was in 5th grade. So let’s say 2.

    5) Vegas Baby!!!
