The Friday Fives

1. What was your favorite Christmas? What was your worst?

Worst is easy. It was in the Army and I had no where to go. Went to a movie, went downtown in Stuttgart and hung out with Army buddies. Ate at the barracks mess hall. And none of it felt right.
Best? I have had amazing Christmas moments with my family. And one that stands out, for no real “what a great present” kind of Christmas happened one year during a bit of a blizzard. We were driving to Grand Junction on Christmas morning and the roads were so bad that just outside of Meeker we turned turned the family sedan around, went back home and had an improvised Christmas meal made of convenient items from Circle K (Mom had no fixins’ on hand because we were planning on going to Grandma’s house in Grand Junction.) The sheer oddness and family togetherness of the affair stays with me to this day.

2. How do you deal with confrontation? Do you seek it out or do you avoid it? Are you more apt to be the confronter or the confronted?f

At work I deal with confrontation pretty well. In my personal life, I often let it fester and swell like an ugly skin boil.

3. Do you still listen to the music from your high school/college years on a regular basis?
I still listen to Elvis Costello, Talking Heads and Springsteen. I was in high school from 78 – 82 and there was some stuff from back then and some absolutely terrible stuff, but I guess that might be true from any era. (In my car when no one is around I will listen to some ELO to get through some traffic madness – but Shhh! this is my little secret. )

4. What are your five favorite possessions?

I searched majikwah.com but I can’t determine if this has been asked before – at least not this way – so here we go:

  • My big ass flat screen television. I like this thing perhaps way to much.
  • My lap top. Watching television and cruising the web concurrently is such a satisfying pastime.
  • My car. Trogg, my 2008 Hyundai Tucson is a sweet ride. Comfortable, safe and does amazing in the snow and ice.
  • My leather bound journal. It is huge with lots of big lines and ability to be refilled and it is an absolute joy to write in.
  • My mp3 player. My God, how did we ever live our lives with the conveniences of instant access to all of our music?
  • Honorable mention – my cell phone. However I can live without it – though insta web and text messaging are pretty cool to have.
  • 5. What is the worst movie sequel ever made, what is the best sequel ever, and what movie should have had a sequel but didn’t?

Worst sequel – “Arthur II” This is extraordinarily bad.
Best sequel – slam dunk _ “Godfather II.”

    1. 1) Best was Christmas ’03 I came home from work and the girlfriend(wife) had decked out the condo and had coffee and presents waiting for me. Worst this year. if you have to ask…
2)I try to avoid it but if it is there then I liek to address it and deal with it.
      3)Yup
4)None posessions are just that stuff. All my stuff is replaceable.
      5)worst- caddyshack II and III
      best- EMPIRE STRIKES BACK!
      shouldda- Serenity

    2. 1. Best: Any of the years when I was really little (and bratty) at my grandparent’s house. I would insist on sleeping in front of the tree, and would make a bed out of couch cushions and put out my sleeping bag. Somehow, miraculously, Claus managed to fill up the three with presents each year, with me sleeping right in front of the tree. Worst: Nothing really comes to mind–probably the first one after my dad had died.

      2. At work, I don’t avoid them–I like to confront things head on to facilitate progress. At home, I tend to avoid them until I have my thoughts crystallized, and can feel confident and eloquent (lover’s spats can really balloon if not handled delicately).

      3. High school no, college yes. (I had some seriously bad taste in high school, Hall & Oates, Thompson Twins, Go Go’s, etc.). I still enjoy Morissey, Elvis Costello, Depeche Mode, etc.

      4. I’m with Bernstein on this one. It’s all replaceable. Among my favorite things, though, kitty, my bicycle, a couple of paintings, and some photos are the things I’d save first if necessary.

      5. Worst Sequel: Speed 2. Best Sequel: Weekend and Bernie’s II. Sequel we Crave: Ernest Goes to Camp: Again.

    3. 1) Best: Nachos and peppermint ice cream with my sister.
Worst: The one after my dad moved out of the house as a kid.

      2) If confrontation needs to happen I will seek it out and get it done with. I am usually the confronter. More people need to learn how to get on with the confronting.

      3) Yes, Poco kicks ass.

      4) Computer and the forgotten family I keep in my closet. Merry Christmas.

      5) Worst: Matrix 2 and 3. Best: Aliens

    4. 1. hmmm i am really bad at remembering things like “christmas”. it has been sort of a hassle for the last oooh 20 years of my life. so i would have to say 1982, when we were getting slammed by that major blizzard here in DTown, is my favorite. blizzards are a lot of fun when you’re 7. its tough to really pick a “worst”.

      2. it seems that i tend to avoid it in my advancing age.

      3. yes indeed…although i havent busted out any Exploited in quite some time.

      4. i would say my watch, my iphone and my ipod. everything else sort of blends together now.

      5. worst: Slap Shot 2
best: Evil Dead 2, Terminator 2
