Friday Fives

1. What’s your favorite “road food” when traveling?
Beef Jerky. Roadside beef jerky is the best, home made and usually really spicy.

2. What is your favorite Ethnic cuisine?
Either Tex Mex or Vietnamese. I vacillate between the two.

3. What is your favorite kitchen gadget?
I have the bottle cap opener that Ed or Julie bought me at the Great American Beer Festival. It pops the bottle cap right off. IT is fun and easy and makes me want to drink more beer (Like I need an excuse.)

4. What is your favorite television snack?
Lately it is peanuts in the shell. Crack a few open and you are hooked. Pistachios too, bur right now I am on a peanut kick.

5. What is your favorite cooking ingredient:? (Salt and Pepper don’t count.)

Roasted Anaheim/Hatch green chili peppers. They can go in anything. Eggs, stew, green chili, obviously. stir in some with tomatoes, and zucchini or green beans. mmmmmm.

  1. 1) Junk food of any kind. Apparently when you drive, junk food does not have the same amount of calories. Amazing!

    2) Mexican. Duh. Although Indian is yummy. And I like asian of all kinds. Italian tends to be good as well. Oh, and there is my favorite Jewish Deli…

    3) Convection toaster oven. Heating up the entire oven for small things is what has caused global warming to this point. STOP IT!

    4) Nachos made with velvetta cheese, can of spicy RoTel, yummy in my tummy.

    5) Garlic. And my house is a vampire-free zone. Double win.

  2. 1)Dill Pickle sunflower seeds
    2)Italian, more garlic
    3)Thank God for the microwave
    4)Popcorn
5)Iron CHef ginger sauce with orange

  3. 1. What’s your favorite “road food” when traveling?

local greasy spoon food. Anything from a mom and pop cafe, family owned, and full of fat locals. That, my friend, is where you will find a chicken fried steak that will change your life.

    2. What is your favorite Ethnic cuisine?

if I understand the question correctly, the answer is Mexican. However, I hardly think of it as ethnic. Growing up in Arizona and living Colorado, Mexican food to me is the default… you racist.

    3. What is your favorite kitchen gadget?

spring fed tongs. All my life growing up, these were the tongs we had.

Do you remember these? They suck. I still have two pairs and they are useless. I can’t believe we beat the Russkies using tongs like this. For our wedding registry, we scored some ‘restaurant style spring loaded tongs’. They look like this, and they make absolutely everything easier in the kitchen.

If you aren’t using these tongs, just kill yourself. I have two pairs (of varying length, of course). I can’t imagine having to go back to using one of these can openers. Remember these (below)? God, we are spoiled. I have one of these in the kitchen somewhere, too. I only use it to whip my dogs.

I think of an abacus when I see this. Then, of course, I whup the dogs. I am not even going to insert a picture of what an acceptable can opener is. if you read this site and you think this is a good can opener, perhaps you are somewhat less of an elitist than me… and I applaud you for that. If you see this can opener (above) in my kitchen, it is probably sticking out of my dogs’ eye. Don’t pull it out! Seriously, I think it is holding stuff in place. Sort of like how you don’t pull a thorn out of your tire until you get home? Know what happens if you pull that thorn out? Dog blood all over the goddamn carpet, that’s what.

    4. What is your favorite television snack?

I don’t have a specific tv based snack. Being a leader, though, I will not avoid your question just because it was poorly presented. So, what is my favorite snack? Those ice cream sammiches made of cookies. These things paralyze me with joy. It’s like boobies, I am just rendered blissfully helpless in their presence.

    5. What is your favorite cooking ingredient? (Salt and Pepper don’t count.)

single ingredient? diced onion. Can I elaborate now? Butter, onion, jalapenos, serranos, and crushed red peppers, and heat. Now, add any meat and you got a pot of love!

  4. 1. Funyon’s(r), and diet cola. The right blend of fat, carbs, and caffeine to stave off lethargy.

    2. That’s a hard question, as “ethnic” is pretty well ingrained into American eating. I’ll go with Vietnamese, as its the perfect blend of exotic ingredients with classic French technique. Old world and new colliding.

    3. The cast iron skillet. It heats up quickly and retains heat better than other materials. It can go from stove to oven to grill without worry, and cleans up easily. American ingenuity at its best.

    4. Beer and marcona almonds.

    5. Fresh basil torn from the plant. Peps up pasta and makes an interesting sorbetto or mojito even.

  5. 1. What’s your favorite “road food” when traveling?
Beef Jerky. Would have to agree 100%.
    2. What is your favorite Ethnic cuisine?
Italian and Cajun, if you consider Cajun it ethnic. It might be regional. If it doesn’t qualify, Indian seems to be the new favorite.
    3. What is your favorite kitchen gadget?
I have a lot of love for the food processor. Not in a really dirty sort of way.
    4. What is your favorite television snack?
Not watching much TV these days, but I love popcorn. Heavy butter. Oh yeah.
    5. What is your favorite cooking ingredient:? (Salt and Pepper don’t count.)
    Garlic and Onions.

  6. 1.) Roadkill. It’s easy to find when “on the road”, affordable and has that natural baked by the sun smell and feel. Sailrabbits are my favorite roadkill, not so much to eat, but to throw. They fly so well once you peel them from the highway.
2.) American–those crazy American’s are just so doggone inventive (this Canadian knows)! They make most ethnic foods taste better! Just look at sweet and sour pork! Look at pizza! Brilliant!
    3.) Anything that’s sharp.
    4.) Roadkill jerky.
5.) Jalapenos, pickled, raw, anytime, anywhere, on anything!

  7. 2. What is your favorite Ethnic cuisine?
Either Tex Mex or Vietnamese. I vacillate between the two.

    – I can verify this. I once saw him vacillate on both. It takes aim!
