The Friday Fives

1. When did you last get lost
I currently have a new job and I feel lost most everyday. It has been two weeks and I don’t seem to have my bearings yet.

2. Have you ever been flying
In a plane, yes. Have I flown a plane. No. I think we all know that would probably not turn out well. I don’t have that kind of prolonged concentration needed to fly a plane. I am trying, through MS Flight Simulator, to tackle take offs and landings. And even with a virtual plane, I owe Boeing about 7 million in crashed airplanes.

3. What do you always listen to
I can always listen to some banjo pickin’ blue grass

4. When does the day feel long
at 3:30 in the afternoon. The high energy tasks are done, the rest of the day is admin and paperwork and time comes to a standstill.

5. Tell me about your day
Yesterday? Glad you asked. Suspended a kid for working out a drug transaction via email at work. Wrote eight people for attendance and performance went to see a special theatrical version of This American Life at a movie theater then mossied down the road to meet Grace Slick at an Art Gallery. A bad day turned into a great day. Great work, Lono!

  1. 1. Ummm. . . I was in San Francisco last week, and it seemed like I walked around in circles and was lost the whole time. At one point, my blood sugar was crashing, I was lost in Chinatown, and I felt like I was going to fall. *That* was pretty lost.

    2. I do fly *on* planes a lot. A memorable recent flight was on a 9-seat airplane from Molokai to Maui, hugging 3,000 foot sea cliffs and hovering over quarter-mile waterfalls. It was a quite remarkable.

    3. Roy’s advice.

    4. The moment I feel defeated.

    5. Yesterday wasn’t great. Work has been very tense lately, and I feel nervous and out-of-control most of the time. I capped off the workday by visiting my much-loved internist Dr. Dude, who informed me that I need another biopsy, and that I should be heavily medicated, and soon, to stop stress from killing me. The evening was okay, dinner out, early to bed, and then wide awake again by midnight.

  2. !) The last time I was lost was when I was 25 & living in Los Angeles. Somehow I ended up in South Central wearing a flight jacket, Doc Martens & a shaved head, even though I’m not nor ever have been a skinhead. Fortunately, some very nice elderly gentlemen directed me back to the freeway & soon I was back in Long Beach.

@) I’ve been flying many times though have never flown a plane. My father used to own & fly his own plane but all I can recall of the experiences is the smell of a barf bag.

#) I always listen to music. Whether I’m plugged in or not, I can always hear a song in my head. What I do not listen to are the nattering ons of crazy people or the gospel according to a large black man on the A train.

$) The day starts to feel long at about 5PM unless I know there’s a cocktail coming straight at my face in an hour or so. Fortunately, that shall be this evening thanks to the frustrations of work over the last 2 days.

%) My day started early without exercise & then proceeded to devolve into irritation as I searched for a shared branch of my credit union which I finally found but could not complete my transaction at because of a restriction placed on my account in error. Sadly, my credit union is now located in the cesspool known as Hollywood & was not yet open at 9 o’clock AM, EDT so I must now venture back uptown to make my deposit. At least I’ve extra money for aforementioned cocktails & for that, I am thankful.

  3. 1. I am currently teaching 8th grade algebra for the rest of the school year. I am often lost in the math concepts and have to do a lot of homework and internet research to find my way through the problems before I have to teach them.

    2. I have not flown often in a plane (I am not well traveled). I do fly regularly in the swimming pool (butterfly).

    3. The voices in my head telling me to bash that person over there with a bowling trophy.

    4. After 3rd period and dealing with the two hours of 8th graders from hell. This is about 10:30 am.

    5. Today, I overslept. It is, however, a teacher work day and the parent association is providing lunch, so it was no big deal. The math and science departments are finished grading the benchmark tests and so can leave now at any time (I however am waiting for the free lunch). After lunch I am getting my nails done, grading a lot of papers, and then I am meeting the Aquatics Supervisor from the City of Denver at a bar so we can work on a pool manual without any distractions.
Today should be a good day.

  4. 1.) Being lost for me is quite normal; A state of existence I have dubbed “the scenic route”. The last time I got lost? Why, just the other night as I was leaving Racine’s at 11pm. To be fair, the 4 beers, 3 margaritas and 3 other beers I drank may have had something to do with that.

2.) I have flown ALOT, starting at the wee age of 7 ( I am happy to say that I am well-traveled ). My most memorable flight ( I’m adding this due to the sheer boredom of the original question ) was on a 12-seat, prop-driven, puddle-jumper from Pittsburgh to some hayseed airport in rural Pennyslvania. We flew through this massive thunderstorm that lead me to believe that I had accidentally boarded the famed Vomit Comet. The plane was constantly being buffeted about by the winds with our cruising altitude somewhere between stomach-churning and bag-breathing.There was lightning everywhere you looked and so much rain that it sounded as if the plane was being pummeled by hail.Rather terrifying but also strangely exhilarating.

3.) I’m always in the mood for some classical music.

4.) When I’m bored. I hate being idle. If I’m done at work, I just leave. Luckily my job is pretty busy so most of my days fly by.

5.) Let’s see. I was awakened by my kind-of-new puppy kicking me in the back with his ridiculously long legs. Rolling out of bed found me next in the kitchen making my morning pot o’ java. Next were the usual grooming rituals and then off to catch the shuttle for work. So far my day has been productive. Haven’t found the Cure yet, but I know its hiding around here somewhere.

  5. 1. When did you last get lost?

well, I am very rarely properly and totally lost. That only happens four wheeling. It is a very purposeful and strategic lost… like mountain biking on Sundays. However, just this evening I turned the wrong way on the freeway because I wasn’t sure if Bellevue was north of south of where I was. Turns out it was north.

    2. Have you ever been flying?

of course, what kind of dumb question is that? My father in law is a pilot. He takes us flying to get to the store. If you had any idea how remote he lived, you would understand that option isn’t beyond the pale at all. For some Taylor sweet corn in August, I would learn to fly myself if necessary.

    3. Who do you always listen to?

Grateful Dead, NPR, and Bob Dylan. Oh, and you… dear reader. Just kidding. No one cares what you think.

    4. When does the day feel long?

4 pm is about the toughest for me. Inertia is slipping, and coffee just won’t work that late. My body is on to me. Yet, I am wide awake at 7 pm, 8 pm, and 9 pm. In fact, if I didn’t force myself to get to bed around 10 pm… I would be wide awake all night. Just like I am wide awake right now.

    5. Tell me about your day.

what a banner day! One of the best days I can remember. I went to work, of course. After work I went to see a screening of a live evening with nerd god Ira Glass from This American Life. It was awesome. Then, I went to go see and meet Grace Slick (Jefferson Airplane fame) at a art show. That band is a big influence on me (I have two different Jefferson Airplane box sets)… so that was extremely rewarding. She sat and told stories, it was super cool. Then, I came home and watched a new ‘Lost’. After that? Stone Temple Pilots re-unite live onstage on the Kimmel show. Seriously, you could not define a more rewarding day for me that didn’t involve Elizabeth Kucinich.

  6. 1) I’m not sure I’m following what you’re asking…

    2) Lots. I can tell you that C10 AIr Force Cargo Plane, with cargo netting seating for 8 hours is not fun.

    3) The soundtrack to Rent. I do love me a good show tune.

    4) 5pm till I put little Joe to sleep.

    5) Let’s see – I just wrote the national TV ad for Eukanuba dog food. Am going to the VIP tour at Coors Brewing company this afternoon. Working on finding voice talent for said commercial. Really not much today.

  7. 1)I had to ask directions once in Paris but I knew where I was just not how to get where I wanted to be.
    2)Never as a pilot.
3)I have very eclectic taste in music. I do love the sound of waves on the ocean beach.
4)4pm the shift is not quite half over and the traffic is bad!
5)Woke took the dogs for a walk, attended PALS class untill 3:30pm then came home to lounge and be a dork and play X Box.
