About (contact me, who am I and all that)

Wherein I discuss why the title, why the screen name and how to contact me.

From the preface of the 1855 edition of Walt Whitman’s Leaves of Grass:

I first discovered this passage taped to a door in a dorm in college. I was struck by its freedom and wonder. When it came time to craft a blog and make a few declarations of who I am, I immediately went to good old Walt for some words of wisdom.

“This is what you shall do: Love the earth and sun and the animals, despise riches, give alms to every one that asks, stand up for the stupid and crazy, devote your income and labor to others, hate tyrants, argue not concerning God, have patience and indulgence toward the people, take off your hat to nothing known or unknown or to any man or number of men, go freely with powerful uneducated persons and with the young and with the mothers of families, read these leaves in the open air every season of every year of your life, re-examine all you have been told at school or church or in any book, dismiss whatever insults your own soul; and your very flesh shall be a great poem and have the richest fluency not only in its words but in the silent lines of its lips and face and between the lashes of your eyes and in every motion and joint of your body.”

Majikwah?
In my earliest Internet days – probably around 1996 or 1997, or so – I had to log on to my new account ( I think it was an AOL account) and take a screen name. Variations of Roy weren’t available but the Avalanche had won an important game on their way to winning their first Stanley Cup. The headline read Magic Roy, which if you are in Denver you’d know that is prounounced Magic Wah. A few spelling changes later and voila’ – majikwah.

If need be, I can also be found through that cultural enigma, MySpace

  1. Roy! Hope all is well at RSS. I’m enjoying school. Lots of reading . . . and I mean LOTS. Fortunately, it’s usually very interesting. How is the FCRT handling things without me? Keep in touch, and I’ll continue to submit captions every week. — Alex
