The Friday Fives

1. If you could recommend just one music documentary or docudrama, what would it be?

“The Last Waltz” by Martin Scorsese, featuring The Band. If early-to-mid-1970s classic rock is your thing, take a look. Some classic performances from a cast of dozens of rock icons.

2. What’s your favorite song with a road, highway or interstate in the title?

“On The Road Again” by Willie Nelson. Not a highway song, but hey, he was a member of “The Highway Men” along with Kristopherson, Cash, and Waylon.

3. What is a FREE thing everyone should know/use?

Your local library. They have everything. Games, Movies, tech, books, audiobooks, eBooks, and physical books. Go forth and use them.
As a child, the library was my happy place. I would check out the five-book limit and pore through them in a few days. – how-to books, biographies, art books – then back to the library to find more.

4. What did every 90s house have that’s gone now?

A landline phone and a caller ID box. And there was also that cordless phone with the expanding antenna with spotty reception, especially if someone used the microwave while you were on the phone.

5. What’s a small thing that instantly makes your day better?

That first sip of coffee in the morning. I wasn’t a real coffee drinker until my time in the army. There was always a pot or an urn of coffee brewing in any office I was in while in Germany. Then you would go out into the economy and order a coffee at some guesthaus or bistro with your meal, and this exquisite cup of caramel, black richness would show up at your table and change the whole game of what coffee was about. I now have fresh-roasted coffee from our home roasting appliance and then prepared each day, ground and steeped in a French press – the only real way to make coffee. I have lain in bed in the morning just thinking about making that day’s first pot and then enjoying that first sip.

  1. 1) I have come to like the longer multiple episode ones, like the Tom Petty One, The Eagles, but the one that stands out is The DEfiant Ones about Dr. Dre and Jimmy Iovine’s rise to the top level of the music and tech biz.

    2) Take It Easy, The Eagle. I mean, who isn’t tryin’ to lighten their load?

    3) Trails of all kinds. Colorado is an amazing place with trails for hiking, biking and getting lost in all sorts of environments.

    4) VCR. DVDs came to be a mainstay later 90s and into the 2000s. But VCRs became cheap enough for everyone to own one versus renting one at the video store.

    5) Not jumping right into work. I can sit, enjoy some coffee, my morning made-from scratch oat protein muffins and whatever episode of trashy TV that I want to watch. I haven’t had to show up on some company’s set schedule for more than 10 years now and, yet, I still get more done in a day than I ever did working within a company.

  2. 1) Summer of Soul documentary by Questlove is pretty damn good.

    2) Born to be Wild – Steppenwolf

    3) Agree with Roy. The Library is the best.

    4) to go with Tony’s answer a rewinder for the VHS tapes so you didn’t burn out the VCR

    5) The rare day that my brain and body align with work day off and I can actually sleep in to 7.
