Friday Fives

1. Do you like, dislike, or pay no attention to the wind?
I come from a very windy part of the country – northwest colorado, south-central Wyoming. And there is really wind there – always, all the time to the point where you can’t not pay attention to it. As a result on a nice, calm day in Denver with no wind or only a very slight breeze, I take a second to notice it and pay it heed and appreciate the stillness.

2. Do you have allergies or sinus made worse by the wind?
The wind kicks up the pollen which activates the allergies for me – yes. Thus my addiction to Flonase.

3. Have you ever been caught in a big wind (not a hurricane or tornado)?
See above. 30 and 40 mile per hour winds at my mom’s ranch outside Baggs, Wyo was not uncommon.

4. When was the last time you flew a kite?
About four years ago. Before that maybe seven years ago when I flew them quite frequently in a vacant field across the street from my apartment.

5. Would you like to have the power of flight?

  1. 1. I am somewhat indifferent to the wind, unless it becomes a nuisance or hinderance to my planned or underway activities. Then it just pisses me off.

    2. Probably. I have some allergies and inherently the wind will make whatever gets my allergies going even worse.

    3. I have been caught in a hurricane in NYC, but we are asked to dismiss these trivial accounts. So I can tell you from experience that the wind in northern Scotland on the coast across the channel from northern Ireland is wind like none other. They actually have wind sickness there, because the wind blows hard and consistently sideways, so the noice and pressure on one’s ears causes a multitude of pains, including popping your eardrums. We had to wear ear coverings at all times when on the naval base there.

    4. April at the Arvada Kite Fest. it was a acrobatic kite which in the wrong hands (mine) is actually quite dangerous and hurts a lot when someone gets hit with it a a high rate of uncontrolled diving speed.

    5. Yep. Flapping my arms ain’t cutting it, at all.

  2. 1) A gentle breeze is nice. A big gusty wind before a storm is cool. Being super windy all the time for no reason is annoying.

    2) Dust & pollen blown about by wind is annoying.

    3) I have been in some of the legendary storms on the Great Lakes. Additionally here in Florida I have been on the receiving end of a couple of tropical storms.

    4) Years who before Mont Ella was developed I was out there on a night shift and it was so GD windy that my partner and I fabricated a kite out of “supplies” found in the ambulance. It was glorious and it flew! For 10 seconds then looped an do e and exploded on impact. Good times.

    5) Fuck yes! Unless I had to be deformed and have weird skin flaps under my arms n junk. I’m thinking Superman style=cool, underarm skin flap= lame.
