Friday Fives

1. How often do you cook at home?
Usually, with my chaotic work schedule, I only cook on Sundays.

2. How did you learn how to cook?
Both of my parents are amazing cooks. Dad was an Army cook and made the best breakfasts. Mom is a little Betty Crocker with mad spatula skills. I learned from them in house where everything happened in the kitchen.

3. What is a meal that has special meaning to you?
Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday and my favorite meal. It is the holiday in my past where more family is gathered together than with any other holiday, and that makes is special.

4. What is the last meal you cooked?
I made a big old pot of green chili a few weeks ago. Oh, yeah I also cooked an amazing pork roast in a new pan I bought. The roast was good but the pan drippings gravy was divine.

5. What is your least favorite thing to cook?
I am not a big dessert cooker. Cakes and cookies are not my thing. Pie, maybe, if I don’t have to make the crust.

  1. 1. Between Adam and I, we cook almost every night. Adam is the more creative culinary expert, while I go for the “this’ll make lots of leftovers” meals.
    2. Mom taught me how to *bake*, but Food Network has expanded my cooking abilities. I heart you, Michael Chiarello! ..even if you do live a lie with your “wife”.
    3. I have to say Thanksgiving is my favorite meal, as well. Nothing like gathering with your closest friends and family around a butter-and-bacon-injected bird.
    4. I made Chicken Parmesan (excellent recipe, I might add) and baked butternut squash (hee hee I said “nut”) on Tuesday night. It kicked ass.
    5. Anything that requires handling raw chicken. Slimy, cold, slippery and viscous. Hey, that sounds remarkably like my ex.. no wonder!

  2. 1. Like RW, itÂ’s very rare for me to cook any days other than Sundays. My workdays are simply too long, I have way too much to do, and lately IÂ’ve been eating out a lot.

    2. I learned most of the basic techniques from watching my mom. I gained much of my knowledge from television cooking shows, though—of which I’m still a huge devotee. But I owe most of my ability to trial and error, and continued experience.

    3. I agree—Thanksgiving. It’s a holiday that’s *about* a meal, and togetherness. With that said, it’s by no means my favorite meal.

    4. Two SaturdayÂ’s ago I made Thai green curry. I had one bowl. It was delicious. I threw out the rest five days later, as I didnÂ’t eat at home again that week.

    5. I donÂ’t like handling raw poultry, so anything I can do to avoid doing so is great (e.g., buy the pre-cut strips of chicken for $9 a pound so that I wonÂ’t have to touch them). I also loathe repetitive activities in general, so baking cookies gets very old, very fast.

  3. One tip for the raw poultry crowd (and that seems like a big group) latex gloves. They make cooking a breeze.

  4. 1. as most of you know, I LOVE to cook and frequently try recipes out (some good/some bad). Poor Reid, he never gets the same thing twice.

    2. My Gramma and mother taught me how to cook & bake. Any skill I have accrued, however, is from being a sous chef in Seattle, restaurant manager in Cherry Creek and plain ‘ole practice.

    3. I love Thanksgiving as well. Eat until you drop, what’s *not* to love about it?

    4. I cooked an ENORMOUS and totally unnecessary Mexican Lasagna Suiza last weekend. 1 hour prep, yeah RIGHT, Emeril (you bastard).

    5. Hmmm, I get bored with chopping & stirring sauces continuously.
