Friday Fives

1. Would you consider yourself a good singer? How would you describe your singing voice?
I am not a very good singer. I can’t vocally read music and have to be singing in a group to be able to sing. I don’t break out into solos.

2. Do you sing in the shower? What about in your car? Do you sing along to the radio/CDs a lot? Do you prefer singing when you’re alone, or do you belt out tunes at any time?
I sing in the car and will from time to time burst out in song. Sometimes, I try to sound like Willie Nelson while singing a pop hit from the radio. It’s good fun. You should try it some time. Take the sullen moodiness of Willie from, say, “Blue Eyes Cryin’ In The Rain” now apply that sullenness to the latest Christina Aguilera song. Its fun.

3. Who is your favorite singer at the moment, and why?
Country music songwriting wizard Steve Goodman. His voice is pure beauty and his songwriting is exquisite. “City of New Orleans” “God Bless Our Mobile Home “Gentle on My Mind”; “You Never Even Call Me by My Name.” The guy is a genius. And, unfortunately, no longer with us.

4. Do you ever watch the show “American Idol”? Who will win this year’s competition?
No a big American Idol fan. I have no idea what is going on this year on that show. Apparently, to read the new, Mario is out and everyone, I mean everyone, is just shocked. Shocked.

5. Name a song that accurately reflects the way that you’re feeling right now.
I am in a pretty Peter Gabriel mood right at ths moment (Friday, 9 30 a.m.) And the chorus from Solsbury Hill is running through my head. Now what exactly does that mean? Does that mean it is my favorite song? Does it mean that I am suddenly a Peter Gabriel fan? I think not. But are there social implications to the song that runs on reply in the back my mind all day. Can I graph and compile the songs and their frequency in my psyche and get an indication of how my day will be? Songstrology? Crap. I have had too much coffee.

  1. 1. There are a number of things to which IÂ’ll freely confess, “I suck.” Singing is one of them. Thanks to years of chain smoking and the luck of the genetic draw, my “singing voice” is somewhere between the sound of a gut-shot crow and a ’68 VW.
    2. Consequently, I donÂ’t sing in the shower, nor the car. IÂ’m more apt to whistle a tune than sing it.
    3. Presently, my favorite singer is Brandon Flowers of The Killers. He conveys a timeless glam-rock sheen that I just love.
    4. I don’t watch much reality television, so I’m not conversant in “Idol.” Generally, I pull for the good-looking one.
    5. Hmmmm. .. that’s tough. I’ve been in the process of listening to a cavalcade of sad music lately. For example, Robbie Fulks, “Rock Bottom, Pop. 1” http://robbiefulks.com/discography/songs/00002.html.

  2. 1) I think I’m an above average singer. I spent too many years in choirs & voice lessons not to be. My parents would be furious if I sucked, I think.

    2) I sing incessantly in the car, but not so much in the shower. Typically, I’m alone but with enough to drink, I can belt out some Garbage.

    3) I think my favorite singer currently is Lisa Gerrard. Jenn was kind enough to loan her DCD box set to me & I’ve been listening to it incessantly.

    4) American what?

    5) Strangely, this morning’s song is Tina Turner’s “Complicated Disaster.” I can’t shake the chorus melody from my head.

  3. 1. I sing fairly well. I just lack confidence. I have a strong alto and can read music vocally. I have sung in a choir in the past. Just don’t ask me to solo.

    2. I sing in the shower, car, on the guard stand (it’s a great way to stay awake) and when appropriate to the moment I will break out in song to make a point (blame Nuj for that).

    3. There are too many to choose from. Joe Jackson was the first to pop into my head though. I,m not sure why, maybe it’s because he is 12 feet tall.

    4. I only watch the first rounds of freakiness. And I always think about some of the contestants, “don’t they have anyone who loves them?”

    5. “Counting Flowers on the Wall” by the Statler Brothers, because I’m bored and looking for a little craziness.

  4. 1. I can sing, but my training was classic church so i sound like a priest.
    2. I sing in the shower but not the car, durges or hymns, nothing like jesus to start the day.
    3. Susan Mckeown, her voice is PERFECt, she has perfect pitch.
    4. No, ugh
    5. “Lost Without You” by Sting currently. Mister E2, that’s true.

  5. 1. While I don’t think I’m a *terrible* singer, that’s a difficult ability to judge in one’s self. It’s like the people who don’t realize the tone of their voice could peel paint off walls, or people who think their ass looks great with a thong hanging out of their pants, or overweight middle-aged women thinking they look good in hip-hugging bell bottoms. Sometimes you just have to wait for a passer-by to look at you in sheer delight, horror or thinly-veiled amusement to know things about yourself. You won’t catch me singing in public anytime soon.
    2. I like singing Patsy Cline tunes in the shower – I *almost* sound like her to my horribly untrained ear. As for the car, it really depends on my level of boredom. Usually listening to the tune is good enough, but there are a few songs I can’t resist – and I’m with Roy: Blue Eyes Cryin’ In The Rain tops my list of singables.
    3. Fave singer at the moment is likely Dwight Yoakam. His acoustic.net album has been my standby for weeks now. Haunting, heart-breaking and somewhat easy to cry to when you’re drunk and wanna shed some excess tears.
    4. I watch the bad singers and then lose interest. I get very bored with the time-after-time crappy pop tunes being peppered with ‘vocal embellishments’ to show off range. Ugh. Predictable and it hurts my ears.
    5. A song to reflect my mood today? “Black Coffee” by Ella. I’m still working on mine.

  6. Update: Now that I have polished off my coffee and am waiting for Adam to finish doing his hair, I have the “Mahna Mahna” song in me noggin. It’s gunna be a weeeeeeeeird day.

  7. 1. a good singing voice is not on my top 10 list of talents. i can sing in alto passably, but nothing to write home about
