Friday Fives

– the post holiday delayed edition

1. Have you ever bought and/or sold items through an online auction (for example, eBay, Yahoo! Auctions, etc.)? Do you remember the first item that you ever purchased through an online auction (or at an online store)? Do you plan to shop online for the upcoming holiday season?
The first thing I ever bought on ebay was a video tape on how to play the banjo. Since then I have bought my sister some Goofy collectibles, a stereo, my digital camera, my cdr/rw player for my computer, a set of pots and pans, a vacume food sealer and the list goes on and on. I have a few gifts that I will be buying on line this year

2. What is your shopping style?
Head straight for a specific store and pick up the item that you’re looking for
Browse through everything and then narrow down your choices from there?
Do you enjoy shopping?

I am a haphazard browser. I don’t go aisle by aisle and instead tend to wander and meander. I don’t really like shopping and have to be in a very certain mood.

3. Is there someone in your life who is particularly difficult to buy gifts for? What do you usually end up getting him/her? Why are they so hard to buy gifts for?
The Rev Ed followed by Reid then probably my sister. Go figure. All of them have eclectic tastes and interests and generally those interests are all across the board. This year I am buying each of them a shiny new liver.

4. Do you prefer to shop at big-name department stores, small family-owned gift shops, or somewhere in-between? Do you tend to patronize local stores as opposed to store chains? Why?
Thrift stores and consignment shops is where it’s at baby! I make a salary of about $4,800 or so dollars a year and so I have to stretch the budget. This year, everyone is getting shiny tin foil hats to welcome in the second term of GW Bush.

5. When’s the last time that you bought something for yourself to enjoy? What was it, and when did you buy it? Do you reward yourself with gifts every so often? Why/why not?
I tend to buy for Roy quite often. He likes books and music and gets a lot of it from his benefector, R-Dub.

  1. 1. Adam & I have sold and bought items on eBay – and done quite well with it. The first item I bought on eBay was this darling light green 3/4 sleeve shrug 50’s sweater with dark green detailing. LOVE IT. I plan on doing most of my X-mas shopping via the Inter-Web.
    2. I, too, can be a ‘haphazard’ shopper. Most of the time, however, I know what I want and make a beeline for it. It depends on what I’m shopping for as to whether or not I enjoy it. Shoes? YES! Pants? NO.
    3. Frustratingly enough, Adam is rather tough to shop for. He buys stuff for his Hudson as he needs it, so that’s out. Clothing is nearly impossible to select, as he’s 6’4″. I usually go with DVDs, CDs and Craftsman accessories as stocking stuffers while I labor over the ‘big ticket item’.

  3. 4. Thrift and vintage stores are where it’s at, indeed. Target is another favorite. I love giving my dollar to the mom-n-pop places, but it doesn’t always happen that way, as being a nursing student equals broke-ass shopping trips quite frequently.
    5. I don’t buy for myself that often, mostly due to guilt over being so broke, but occasionally because I just don’t think about doing it. However, before my surgery, Jenn was able to talk me into buying this lovely black cardigan sweater with gold beads on it – it is an amazing repro from Foley’s. Thank you, Bug.

  5. 1. IÂ’ve bought quite a few things on eBay over the years. I think the first thing I bought was a military group photo. IÂ’ve yet to have the urge to sell things via online auction, however. As far as my holiday shopping goes, IÂ’m already so far behind that I probably donÂ’t have time to shop online.

    2. Believe it or not, IÂ’m not sure I actually like shopping. I like owning things, and I like being sucked up to, but I find the whole process to be somewhat draining. My shopping style is really something to behold. I do better when shopping alone, and I usually begin with a quick, yet thorough, pass through the entire mall (or shopping district), taking special note of things that called out to me. Then, on my way back, I make my purchases in rapid fire succession.

  7. 3. Both of my parents are extremely hard to shop for. They have everything they think they need, have rather quirky interests, and their house is starting to get cluttered, so any gifts need to be compact, and unique.

    4. I shop all over. I shop all of the time, so chances are I visit stores of all sizes. However, Wal-Mart is evil, and I will not patronize their emporium of oppression.

    5. I buy myself gifts to enjoy all of the time. As my grandmother used to say, “Sometimes you have to do nice things for yourself, because you can’t always count on other people to do them for you.” Just yesterday I bought a cashmere overcoat. Nothing says excess like a cashmere overcoat over a cashmere blazer over a cashmere sweater. [Eddie fun fact: Over half of the world’s cashmere goats work overtime just to supply me with soft lustrous fibers.]
