Friday Fives

Friday Fives

1. What was your first Halloween costume?
The earliest I remember is going to a church Halloween party dressed as a hobo, with a straw hat and a coffee grounds beard. I also remember some store bought costume and mask thing of a cartoon super hero but I can’t for the life of me remember who the hero was. I was probably three years old.

2. What was your best costume and why?
Barney, the dinosaur as an unfortunate hunting accident. A mask of Barney, some purple long johns with a dino tail affixed and the addition of an arrow in my midside and a gaping head wound.

3. Did you ever play a trick on someone who didn’t give you a treat?
No. But when I was 19 and 20 we used to hit the streets of Craig trick or treating for drinks. It kind of worked. We usually were laughed at and shooed away, but those that got our joke would give us a beer.

4. Do you have any Halloween traditions?
Used to. I used to always get fired up for Halloween and dress up and go to parties, up until about four years ago and then the fire went out and I don’t get to enthused for Halloween. I am becoming a grouchy old man. Save me, somebody.

5. Share your favorite scary story…real or legend!
President George Bush, 43rd President of the United States.

  1. 1. What was your first Halloween costume? I have no prayer of remembering that far back, sadly. A costume debacle that sticks out, however, is when I tried to dress punk rock in junior high (13 years old maybe) and ended up looking like a hooker. Went over like gangbusters in junior high, lemme tell ya. IÂ’m still scarred.

    2. What was your best costume and why? Best/most effort probably went to my Geisha costume of two years ago. Unfortunately I got over-drunk too quickly at the party and had to be escorted home, hiccupping all the way.

    3. Did you ever play a trick on someone who didn’t give you a treat?
Yeah, I think in junior high/high school we were rude enough to T.P. uncooperative homeowners.

  2. 4. Do you have any Halloween traditions? Every year Reid and I carve our pumpkins, toast the seeds and watch scary movies.

    When I was, like, 13 (apparently junior high was quite traumatic), the girls’ basketball team had a sleepover at a teammate’s house. We went to the cemetery in Lafayette where someone fell into a freshly dug (and empty) grave. The screaming terrified the pants off everyone. Then we played “light as a feather, stiff as a board” and it WORKED. {{shudder}}

  3. 1. What was your first Halloween costume? The first costume I REMEMBER was Tinkerbell. I had my blonde hair up in a bun, a bright-green leafy tutu dress, ballet shoes, a silver wand and wings. The first one I WORE was a little Casper outfit.
    2. What was your best costume and why? Like Jenn, I still love my Geisha costume, and I may bust it out again after I have my eyes Lasik-ified (since we all know geishas don’t wear glasses from 1955 and contacts just plain hurt).. I also loved my “Waffle House Waitress” number. It wouldn’t have worked as well without Adam’s “Short Order Cook” outfit. Order UP!

  4. 3. Did you ever play a trick on someone who didn’t give you a treat? I recall TP’ing a house or two in my day, but it was my brother who engaged in the real Tom-foolery. He and his friend made a ‘man’ using army clothing, pillows and tape and hid up in a tree over the street and dropped him in front of cars as they drove in the neighborhood. Tsk tsk.
    4. Do you have any Halloween traditions? I would love to start some, as I love autumn so very much. I truly enjoyed the ‘punkin carvin’ party’ we had over in Lowry years ago.. maybe we could start something up again next year. Bobbing for beer, maybe? I’LL SAVES YA, ROY!

  5. 5. My ‘favorite’ scary story is quite real, and for those of you who know me also know that I believe that the paranormal exists. Growing up in a haunted house made believers of my entire family. Long story short (too late, I know), one night I woke up and realized someone was standing in the doorway to my bedroom. Thinking it was Mom, I closed my eyes and pretended to continue sleeping (Mom is a notorious worrier and would likely take my temp and give me medicine if she found me awake in the middle of the night). The person walked from my doorway, all the way around my bed, and stopped right in front of my face. It was at this moment that the air changed and I realized it wasn’t ‘mom’. I began to feel very panicked, and then, without warning, I felt the most reassuring pat on my shoulder. It then disappeared. We figure it was Dr. Coachman, the 2nd owner of the house. He had terminal cancer and shot himself in our backyard and was a very benevolent man/spirit.

  6. 1. Store bought “Robin” outfit at about 5 or 6 years old. It was lame but I got tons of free candy.
    2. My Charlie Brown outfit. My friends all told me I have his spirit. Not to mention a freakishly large head.
    3. This question is typical of my adult dating life. Need I say more?
    4. Other than getting completely shit-faced, no.
    5. 4 more years of Bush. That scares me.
